Lane et al. — Vigilance Performance and Mood
A classic controlled study: beat-frequency conditions, a vigilance task, mood measures. Not a sleep app. Not a spiritual system. A lab asking whether the difference tone changes how long you can stay on a dull job.
James D. Lane and colleagues tested binaural auditory beats against vigilance performance and mood. Beta-range versus theta/delta-range conditions are the comparison the later literature keeps citing.

What the work actually did
Participants heard dichotic tones while performing a vigilance task. The paper reports condition differences on performance and mood scales. It is frequently cited because it is early, controlled, and modest in claim.
What it does not prove
One paradigm, one era, limited generalizability to “study music” playlists. Vigilance is not memory, sleep onset, or anxiety in a clinic. Replication and sample size still matter.
