Oster — Auditory Beats in the Brain
Gerald Oster put a nineteenth-century percept back on the desk of working scientists. The beat between the ears is a central-nervous-system event. It is not a speaker trick, and it is not a drug.
Heinrich Wilhelm Dove described binaural beats in 1839. For more than a century they sat in acoustics as a curiosity. In October 1973 Oster’s review in Scientific American framed them as a tool for asking what the brain does with two slightly different tones.
Who, where, when
Gerald Oster wrote as a biophysicist for a general scientific audience, not as a wellness vendor. The piece contrasts binaural beats (dichotic — one frequency per ear, the difference formed centrally) with monaural beats (the mix already in the air). That distinction still decides whether headphones are required.
What the work actually did
Oster reviews localization, diplacusis, and diagnostic interest: if the beat is built in the brain, it can be a probe. He does not claim a consumer protocol, a guaranteed EEG lock, or a clinical indication. The paper is a map of a percept.
What it does not prove
A review in a magazine is not a randomized trial. Later work on mood, sleep, and “entrainment” has to stand on its own methods. Citing Oster as proof that a YouTube track will put someone in theta is a category error.
