Voss et al. — Lucid Dreaming as a Hybrid State

Lucid REM carries wake-like frontal EEG features during REM. Lucidity is a laboratory object, not a brand of track.

Voss, Holzmann, Tuin & Hobson (2009). Sleep. · PMID 19750924 · Shelf

Ursula Voss, Romain Holzmann, Inka Tuin, and J. Allan Hobson characterize lucid dreaming as a state with features of both waking and non-lucid REM. The EEG is the argument.

Who, where, when

Frankfurt / sleep and consciousness. PMID 19750924.

What the work actually did

Lucid REM versus non-lucid REM versus wake: frontal activity that looks more wake-like while the sleeper is still in REM. A hybrid, not a third cartoon realm.

What it does not prove

Lab lucidity is trained, signaled, and scored. A binaural “lucid track” is not this recording. Do not equate a theta beat with metacognition in a dream.

How to use this page

If you use this console before sleep, you are in Stumbrys’ induction neighborhood at best — cognitive plus optional stimulation — not in Voss’s scored REM.
