López-Caballero & Escera — A Failure to Enhance EEG
Negative results are part of the furniture. This paper reports no clear EEG-power or emotional-arousal enhancement under their binaural-beat conditions. Keep it next to the optimistic abstracts.
Fran López-Caballero and Carles Escera tested whether binaural beats would lift EEG power and emotional arousal. They report a failure. That sentence is as important as any positive meta-analytic mean.
Who, where, when
University of Barcelona cognitive neuroscience. PMID 29187819. Open-access Frontiers article.
What the work actually did
Controlled binaural-beat stimulation, EEG, affective measures. The headline result is null under their parameters. Methods are the story: what they played, for how long, with which baseline.
What it does not prove
A null in one protocol does not erase Oster’s percept or every behavioral finding. It does kill the slogan that beats automatically “turn on” a band. Parameters matter; so does the file-drawer.
How to use this page
When a product says the science is settled, open this paper. Settled fields do not still publish careful failures.
Editorial reading of published research. The official paper is authoritative. Not medical advice. Not a claim that consumer audio recreates a trial protocol.
