Schumann resonances: Earth's electromagnetic “hum”
~7.83 Hz fundamentalWhat Schumann resonances actually are, the ~7.83 Hz fundamental, overtones, and myths about 7.83 audio healing.
◈ Science
Schumann resonances are electromagnetic standing waves in the Earth–ionosphere cavity, excited mainly by lightning. The fundamental is near 7.83 Hz with overtones roughly ~14, 20, 26, 33… Hz (values shift with ionosphere conditions).
Playing a 7.83 Hz audio tone is not the same physical phenomenon as the EM cavity mode. Extremely low frequency sound is hard to hear; many “Schumann tracks” are carriers with a 7.83 Hz modulation or binaural beat — a design homage, not lightning cavity coupling into your skull.
Research on ELF EM fields and biology is a separate (and careful) scientific domain from consumer headphone audio.
✦ Mystic / Mythos
Spiritual ecology frames 7.83 as Earth’s heartbeat; grounding practices and “reconnect to planet” meditations use it as a symbol of belonging. Beautiful mythos — keep EM physics and audio practice labeled correctly.
