Interaural Frequency Difference Explained

Interaural frequency difference is the whole trick: one pitch per ear, a slow pulse built in the head — not in the air.

Give the left ear 200 Hz and the right ear 210 Hz. The difference is 10 Hz. That 10 Hz is the binaural beat. It is a comparison your auditory system makes, which is why a speaker in the room cannot do this job.

People hear “frequency difference” and think of a mixed-down warble, the kind two tuning forks make on a table. That is an acoustic beat. An IFD only exists while the two carriers stay isolated until the brainstem.

On this console the beat control is the IFD. The carrier is the audible pitch. Set both, put stereo headphones on, press ENGAGE. If one cup is dead, you have no difference to compare.

Interaural Frequency Difference Explained is a door, not a clinic. What IFD means for listeners. Sit with a true-stereo pair if the hour still wants one. Skip it if silence is the better instrument tonight.
