Phase and Timing Basics for Listeners

A binaural beat is a timing story: two steady tones, a slow drift in their phase relationship, heard as a pulse.

You do not need a lecture on Hilbert transforms. You need this: when two close frequencies run at once, their relative phase walks. The auditory system can hear that walk as beating.

Jitter, dropouts, and aggressive Bluetooth compression are not “more entrainment.” They are timing noise. If the carriers wobble, the difference wobbles with them.

Wired stereo is the boring, correct default. If you use Bluetooth, confirm the stream stays stereo and does not duck or resample mid-session. Then leave the carriers alone.

Phase and Timing Basics for Listeners is a door, not a clinic. Plain-language timing. Sit with a true-stereo pair if the hour still wants one. Skip it if silence is the better instrument tonight.
