Science

400 Hz in one ear, 410 Hz in the other. You hear 10 Hz. That is the whole trick. The Console does it in the browser — headphones required.

Headphones required. Binaural beats only work when each ear receives a different carrier in isolation. Speakers, mono, or one-ear listening will not produce the effect.

400 Hz left, 410 Hz right, 10 Hz beat

What the percept is

Play 400 Hz in one ear and 410 Hz in the other. You do not hear two pitches. You hear a beat at the difference — about 10 Hz — built in the central nervous system. Monaural beats mix in the air. Binaural beats do not.

Monaural versus binaural

Where it is processed

Signals meet in the superior olivary complex, then inferior colliculus, reticular activating system, thalamus, and auditory cortex. EEG and MEG can show auditory steady-state or frequency-following responses. That is not a guarantee that a playlist “entrains” a named state.

Auditory pathway

fbeat = | fL − fR | · carriers typically 200–1000 Hz

Evidence, not slogans

The percept is solid. Behavioral and EEG effects are mixed. A 2023 EEG review found supportive, contradictory, and mixed studies in the same pile. Meta-analyses report modest adjunct effects in some anxiety, pain, and attention protocols. Placebo and individual differences are part of the data. Not a medical device.

EEG bands

Educational only. Not medical, military, or therapeutic advice. Headphones required for a true binaural beat.
