Binaural beats, memory & attention research
Cognitive experiments test whether dichotic pure-tone differences change encoding, recall, vigilance, or attention metrics. Results depend strongly on which beat frequency is used.
Key experimental signal
Garcia-Argibay, Santed & Reales (2019) reported that beta-range binaural beats improved long-term memory performance relative to white noise in their paradigm, whereas theta-range beats impaired performance relative to that control — evidence that “any binaural beat helps learning” is false.
The broader 2019 meta-analysis also examined memory and attention across multiple primary studies, finding overall effects with between-study variability.
Study design implications for listeners
- For active study/work, low-to-mid beta or high-alpha bookends are more coherent with positive cognitive findings than deep delta beds.
- Keep sessions task-paired (one assignment, timer, headphones).
- Track your own results for 1–2 weeks; n=1 still matters for personal fit.
