Alpha waves research (≈8–12 Hz)
Alpha (~8–12 Hz, sometimes charted to ~13 Hz) is the classic “eyes-closed rest” rhythm of human EEG — historically linked to Hans Berger’s early recordings and still a cornerstone of cognitive neuroscience.
What researchers associate with alpha
- Relaxed wakefulness — calm, not asleep; often stronger with eyes closed.
- Inhibitory / gating roles — modern theories often treat alpha as regulating cortical excitability and attention allocation (details debated).
- Individual differences — peak alpha frequency varies with age, state, and person.
Binaural design around alpha
Many “calm focus” and wind-down programs use beat intentions near 8–12 Hz as a middle path between sleepy theta and wired high-beta. That is a reasonable design heuristic, not a guaranteed EEG match.
