Binaural beats meta-analysis: the evidence map
The most-cited modern synthesis of binaural-beat outcome studies is Garcia-Argibay, Santed & Reales (2019), published in Psychological Research. It pooled experimental results across cognition, anxiety, and pain perception — the three domains with enough trials to meta-analyze at the time.

What the authors did
They screened experimental literature on binaural auditory beats (distinct pure tones per ear) and quantitatively combined eligible studies measuring:
- Memory (encoding / recall style tasks)
- Attention (vigilance / focused performance)
- Anxiety (state anxiety or related self-report / clinical settings)
- Analgesia / pain perception (experimental or clinical pain measures)
Twenty-two studies met inclusion criteria for the pooled analysis (exact k varies by outcome domain — always check the paper’s forest plots).
Headline findings (plain language)
- Exposure to binaural beats was associated with measurable effects in the domains above relative to control conditions used in the primary studies (often silence, white noise, or non-binaural audio).
- Effects were not identical across frequencies: different beat ranges (e.g., beta vs theta) can move outcomes in different directions. That matches later single studies where, for example, beta-range beats improved memory metrics while theta-range beats did not.
- The authors conclude binaural-beat exposure can influence cognition and reduce anxiety in experimental settings — with the usual meta-analytic caveats about heterogeneity and small samples.
Limitations you should know: many included trials are short, use different carriers, different exposure times, and different control tracks. Publication bias and small-N psychology experiments are real risks. A meta-analysis is stronger than a blog claim, but it is not an FDA clearance.
