Astral Operator order

Field manual

This floor is a field manual for an archive plus an instrument. It tells you which door to open, in what order, how to read a page, and when to stop reading and lie down — or not. The generator is not a diploma.

Operator order · dual surface · three questions · no course impersonation

Night research desk with books, lamp, and headphones
Fig. 1 — Manual first, then a protocol. The other way around is how people collect scares instead of notes.

Two surfaces, one doctrine

This archive has two doors that are easy to confuse if you only remember the word “experience.”

Knowledge lives at /experience/astral/ — these essays. Indexable. Long. Sourced. Meant to be read in a chair, cited, disagreed with. Lab lives at #experience/astral — the Experience-tab desk: protocols, timers, ENGAGE, the stereo generator in the page. Same doctrine, different job. One is a library. The other is an instrument.

/experiences (plural) is not a third astral door. It is Community. It already 301s there. Do not treat a forum as this archive, and do not treat this archive as a forum. Living culture has rules of its own — Community, and the reading rules on Field reports. Consensus on a thread is culture, not an experiment.

Experience — “I experienced myself outside my body.” Interpretation — “My consciousness left the physical body.” Scientific claim — “Consciousness can independently perceive physical reality outside the body.” Collapse those three and the floor becomes either a church or a sneer. Keep them apart and you can operate.

That is the whole method, restated from Start Here. It applies to a nineteenth-century Theosophical handbook, a first-person how-to book, a 1983 FOIA training review, a 2002 stimulation case, and whatever you write at 3 a.m. after headphones. It applies to this console. Especially to this console.

Suggested order

The order is not a degree program. It is a way not to skip the parts that keep you from harming your sleep or laundering a feeling into a physics. If you are already in distress, you do not start at Protocols. You stop. Safety is not a flavor.

  1. Start Here — doctrine. Three questions. What this desk will not pretend.
  2. Safety — non-negotiable, and above the fold for a reason. No driving. No severe sleep deprivation as a hack. Sleep paralysis named in advance. Stop if distressed. No medical-treatment claims.
  3. Semantics — so “astral,” “OBE,” “lucid,” “sleep paralysis,” and “the phase” do not steal each other’s clothes. Comparison without definition is theft.
  4. Research — what has been demonstrated, proposed, and left open. Blanke, Ehrsson, Voss, the 2025 scoping review of 87 publications. Science is not used here to erase experience. Experience is not used here to overrule science.
  5. Audio — Dove, Oster, consumer use, one school that used stereo, what the beat-literature actually pooled. A frequency is a parameter. It is not a switch.
  6. Atlas — so English how-to is not the world. Tibetan milam, Pali mind-made body, Daoist spirit, Wīrāz, European occult English, Harner’s drum journey: labeled kinship, not a single origin myth.
  7. Protocols — if you still want to work. Window before Rope. WBTB only if the next morning does not own you. Then Field reports — how to write what happened without laundering it into proof.

Optional rooms after the spine, not instead of it: History and the Timeline for the English chapter; People and Schools and Library for who wrote which recipe; Methods and Phenomenology when you need verbs and motifs rather than a timed bed. Do not use optional rooms to postpone Safety.

How to read a page (the three questions, operationally)

On every essay, every paper shelf-note, every FOIA PDF, every manual, ask — in this order — and do not let the third eat the first.

  1. Experience. What was actually reported, by whom, under what conditions? A night. A stimulation session. A trainee in a course. A dreamer signaling from REM. If the page cannot answer this, it is interpretation dressed as data.
  2. Interpretation. What story is being told about the report? Subtle body, brain map, phase of consciousness, other-than-human person, hybrid REM, “Gateway worked.” Traditions disagree. Operators disagree with themselves a year later. Name the story. Do not swallow it as furniture.
  3. Scientific claim. What, if anything, was tested in a way that could have failed? Controls, n, a willingness to be wrong. Intensity of feeling, antiquity of a tradition, and a government PDF do not graduate a claim. Neither does a stereo file you generated yourself.

Two further reading rules, because this archive is dual-use. First: relationship labels on the Atlas are not decorations. Direct predecessor, historical influence, conceptual analogue, shared phenomenology, shared practice, modern reinterpretation, distinct phenomenon — if a page will not pick one, it is not ready. Second: the sits are designs. The Window is a first sit. Second Sleep is a wake-back-to-bed window. The Climb is a long tactile sit on the published 55-minute program. You may disagree, modify, and journal. You may not treat the numbers as metaphysical constants, and you may not call them anyone else’s product.

When to stop reading and lie down

Reading can become a delay that pretends to be rigor. It can also be the only thing standing between you and a badly chosen night. The manual’s job is to say when each is which.

Lie down — if that is what you came to do — only after Safety, only in a bed or chair you can leave, only with headphones if you want Oster’s dichotic percept rather than a room mix, only on a night you do not owe to a drive, a shift, or someone else’s waking care. Start with Window. Window is familiarization with relaxed wakefulness and the edge of sleep. It is not a failure if nothing “happens.” Rope is tactile imagination on a longer bed; it is a later verb. WBTB fragments sleep; it is a tool from lucid-dream and OBE practice, not a BBM invention, and it is forbidden as a lifestyle and forbidden before a morning that owns you.

Do not lie down. If you are here to settle whether consciousness can leave the body: that is a research question, and a night will not close it. If you are frightened and hunting a confirmation: stop; lights; name the room. If you have not read how sleep paralysis is not “getting stuck out of body”: read Safety. If you want Gateway: go to that school; this is not it. If you have not slept: sleep. Sleep debt is not a credential.

When a session ends, return is not optional — body, room, time, notes. Rapid memory decay after sleep-edge states is ordinary. Write while it is warm. Write what occurred, not what the doctrine required. Then stop. You do not re-enter to “finish the job” after terror or after a cinematic hallway. AP-06 Return.

ENGAGE is a stereo generator, not a diploma

The button on the Experience tab starts true stereo: left and right ears get different tones; the beat is the difference. That is Oster’s setup, not a speaker trick, not anyone’s private institute, not a certificate that you completed a path. There is no numbered Focus state on this console. We do not host pirated course audio. Current systematic reviews of binaural-beat outcomes and EEG are mixed and heterogeneous; Garcia-Argibay 2019 and Innamorati 2023 are ledgers, not hymns. Treat beat frequency as an experimental aid designed around relaxation, sustained attention, and sleep-transition conditions commonly used in OBE practice. Do not say “4 Hz causes astral projection.” Do not say “beats are useless.” The percept is real. A particular number is not a demonstrated switch.

If you cannot name carrier, beat, duration, and bed, you are not running a BBM protocol. You are hoping. Protocols exist to make those names speakable, journalable, and disagreeable. That is all the dignity a generator has. It is enough.

You remain the only subject you may volunteer

You do not enroll other people’s nights without permission. You do not scrape Reddit and call it a cohort. You do not tell children to practice. You do not treat a belief in travel as a license to trespass in imagination on someone who did not ask. Other people’s rooms remain other people’s rooms. If this site later publishes founder field notes, they wear the same label yours must wear: first-person field report — not presented as proof of a universal mechanism. A founder is not a twelfth school. An operator is not a proof.

The finished position of the manual, which is also the finished position of the floor:

You don’t have to believe. You don’t have to disbelieve. You can investigate. The signal is ours. The experiment is yours. The explanation remains open. You are the experimenter and the only subject you are allowed to volunteer.
